The Problems with Hearing Aids

To those who aren't deaf, hearing aids seem to be a miracle invention, something which will help the deaf become more normal, more useful in society where hearing is assumed. But this isn't the entire story. While hearing aids can bring back hearing, they can also bring on other problems which might not be understood by the hearing. Hearing aids can be problematic in their technology, not to mention expensive and easy to see. Those who are deaf might not want to share their deafness with others, at least not at first meeting. Perhaps down the road they might explain their hearing loss, but until then, they would rather be just like everyone else.

Being Deaf Doesn't Mean Someone Is Useless

A person who is deaf might seem to garner sympathy, but that's not always the case. In most situations, the deaf person is thought to be less than useful in society, which is far from the case. Not having one sense doesn't mean a person is unable to work or to be productive. In fact, sometimes having one less sense means that you can have heightened senses in other areas, making one far superior to others they know. Treating someone as if they are going to be useless doesn't mean that they are, just that you think they will be. How incredibly judgmental, honestly, when you don't actually know a person - and you judge them only by what they can't do.

Becoming 'Normal' Again

Hearing aids work well to help a deaf person who wants to hear again, or to hear better, in order to function more in society. Deaf persons who want to hear again or parents who want to make sure their children can reach language levels at the same time as their peers will benefit greatly from digital hearing aids, disposable hearing aids, and other hearing aids. However, only you or your loved one can make this decision.
